What is No-Shave November? Why do we celebrate it?
No-Shave November is a month-long campaign deliberately run to raise awareness on cancer patients losing hair and funding for research, education, and prevention. It encourages people to put down their razors for 30 days and donate the money that could have been spent on hair grooming, towards the cause. Men take part by growing their mustache and beards, while women take part by not shaving their body hair for a month.
Cancer patients lose their hair due to intense and vigorous treatments during the phase. Money raised throughout the “No Shave November” campaign goes towards its research, education, and prevention.
What is the objective behind No-Shave November?
As per a survey conducted by WHO,
“Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020.”
The motive is to make an effort to combat cancer by spreading awareness and educating people on the causes leading to cancer, and necessary research related to the cause. The fund raised during the campaign goes into a charity where several organizations work diligently to treat and defeat cancer.
Origin of No-Shave November and Who Started It?
Back in the year 2009, a Chicago-based Hill family created a Facebook Campaign to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and charities after their father, Matthew Hill, died of colon cancer in 2007.
The idea of letting your hair grow long, wild, and free is to promote the concept of appreciating the fact that one is lucky enough to have that hair since cancer patients are losing it due to intense treatments.
Impact and Significance
During the time of No-Shave November, people from around the world contribute to the cause by putting down their razors and other hair grooming essentials for a month and donating the respective amount towards the initiative.
Since 2009, an amount of over $12,000,000 has been contributed by “No-Shavers” to raise cancer awareness, and support its research, education, and prevention.
Many non-profit organizations also participate to raise funds and help defeat cancer.
As of the current leaderboard (10th November 2021), a total amount of $289,396.00 has been raised by 749 members and 381 teams.

You can make a huge difference by joining the force! Put down your grooming kit and donate the amount you would otherwise have spent on grooming your hair to the charity.
To participate in No-Shave November, men grow their mustache and beard wild, long and free whereas women participate by not shaving their body hair for 30 days. Men and women generally spend a good amount of money on grooming products. By donating the same amount to fundraisers, you can create a big difference in generating cancer awareness, research, education, and prevention.
